My trips to the Durham County Jail can be very heartbreaking. To hear the stories of peoples lives sometimes makes it no wonder that they are in the situation that they are in. I look into the faces of so many that are accused of murder. For many it does not seem possible that they could do such a thing. For so many it seems that they just never got a fair shake at life. This was the case for a 16 year old accused of murder that I sat down with recently. He looked like a little kid! My conversation with him was very good and he told me that he wanted to have a relationship with the Lord and that he knew that he needed Him. He told of never having good role models around and just ended up doing whatever he wanted.
For a 21 year old female accused of the same it was so hard to look into her eyes with the hurt that radiated from them. She is getting ready to go to prison. In her mind her life is over. I told her what life could be like for her if she would turn her life over to Jesus and make believe that she was going off to Bible College. I will be working with her on this until the day she is transported. I told her upon her arrival at prison that she needs to seek out the most on fire for Jesus person that she can find and cling to them. This young woman has such a pleasant and sweet attitude with me.
I have been meeting with a 25 year old that is in for murder. She too does not seem like she could commit murder. I have been ministering to her since she got locked up. I immediately started talking to her about the Lord and she has seemed to stick. Everytime she comes in to see me she has her Bible. She shares the things that she is learning. So many drop off but I believe that this one has learned that she must stay with Jesus.
I am extremely happy to see progress in another 25 year old female that is in for attempted murder. She was one of the most hardcore and was always in trouble but I am seeing a different spirit in her which is so awesome!
I am very happy to see a brother that I have been working with for close to a year that is on fire for the Lord and holding daily services. He has 15-20 inmates in with him daily as he teaches the Word of God.
I have a female that I told several months ago that she was to be a teacher of God's Word. She had a very low self esteem and I could tell that she thought there was no way that she could do it. Last week she came in with a big smile on her face. She gleamed as I told her of the things that the other ladies were saying about her. So many told me of her teaching them and praying with them. She smiled with tears in her eyes as she told me how happy she is to be in her role in the jail. She thanked me for believing in her.
These are just some examples of people that I minister to while in the jail. I could go on and on with stories from in there. There are usually somewhere around 500 give or take 25 inmates in the jail on an average. Last I checked there were around 30 in for murder. I have met with the majority of them. So many people that could have their lives changed if they would just surrender to Jesus! I love going into the jail to minister. It ties in so well with the people that I work with on the streets. Many that I deal with on the streets end up inmates and many inmates that get out I end up ministering to on the streets. I have built relationships with so many people. I pray for spiritual fruit to be displayed in these peoples lives! I pray that they can become on fire for the Lord and reach many others for Him!
Please keep the Durham County Jail staff and inmates in your prayers!
