Yesterday I was trying to get out of the jail so that I could get some other things done then return again at 6. The jail staff kept telling me that another inmate had requested to talk to me. I kept rolling with them and was having awesome ministry going on! When I thought I was done there was still one more. This big white guy came out all tatted out. I thought this one was going to be interesting which it much indeed was.
He started telling me about how he had never wanted anything to do with the Lord then someone had slipped a book under his door while he was recently in prison. He actually is still in prison but is in the Durham County Jail to deal with some other charges. He told me the title of the book and it was a book that I did not like because it is not scripturally correct but the Holy Spirit guided me to keep my mouth shut. He went on to tell me about the book then got to the point of what had really turned his life around. He told me that it was what led him to start reading the Bible. He told me that he was "in the hole" at the prison because of a fight in which someone had tried to stab him. He said that all he has been doing is reading the Bible. He said that through reading the Bible he was able to see how the book was not right scripturally. This really made me feel better after keeping my mouth shut about my opinion of the book. I know there are times that I miss it in this area.
He went on to tell me of all the restoration that the Lord was doing in his life. He had told me that he had gotten into trouble by stealing to support a heroin habit. He is nervous about when he gets out and wanted to know if I would help him. I guaranteed him that I would. His court date was today and he received another 12-24 months for the additional charges. Some of his family including his mother was there. I got to meet them. He had already told his mother about meeting me and instantly we were friends as she hugged me and thanked me. This guy has spent the majority of his life behind bars since he was 16 and now it is like he is smiling from ear to ear because of what the Lord is doing in his life. He is receiving love letters from his wife who he hasn't had anything to do with for the last two years and also his kids too! Even after receiving the extra time with shackles on his wrists and ankles he had the joy of the Lord as he blew his family a kiss! His family is so excited about his new life with Christ! No one is more excited than he is!
He is now 32 years old. I look forward to working with him when he gets out. I know that he is going to touch many lives for Jesus! He asked me if he could write me and I said absolutely. The Lord is really moving through this ministry in the Durham County Jail. What a blessing it is to be one of His servants! Pray for Matt!
